A cold room is only as good as its design. Panel thickness, cooling capacity, and backup power dictate whether your stock stays preserved or your power bill climbs.

Based in Kamakis, Eastern Bypass, Shred Designs builds walk-in cold rooms, freezer rooms, blast freezers, and refrigerated storage for food processors, butcheries, hotels, and institutions across Kiambu County and Nairobi. If your system is failing, see Commercial Refrigeration & Cold Room Repair.

We also supply and install split, cassette, ducted, and multi-split AC units surveyed to actual heat load. For large-scale plants, see Commercial & Industrial HVAC.

SHRED COLD

What We Build

Chiller rooms

Walk-in rooms held between 0°C and +8°C for dairy, beverages, meat, fruit, vegetables and flowers, built from insulated panels.

Freezer rooms

Low-temperature rooms held at −18°C and below with thicker panels, insulated floors, heated door frames and defrost systems.

Blast freezers

Rapid freezing rooms that bring product down to −35°C and below in hours, for meat, fish and prepared foods.

Insulated panel construction

PUF or PIR panels in the thickness your temperature needs, with cam-lock joints, sealed floors, doors and fittings.

Refrigeration systems

Condensing units, evaporators, expansion valves and copper pipework sized to the room load, with oil and gas managed for the duty.

Controls, monitoring and alarms

Electronic controllers, high-temperature alarms and temperature logging so a fault is seen before the stock is lost.

What We Size a Cold Room Around

  • The product, the amount arriving each day and the temperature it arrives at
  • Pull-down time: how fast product must reach its storage temperature
  • Door openings and traffic, including forklifts and trolleys
  • Ambient temperature, sun on the walls and whether the room is inside or outside a building
  • Room size and stacking height
  • Power supply (single or three-phase) and backup
  • Drainage and the floor, which for freezer rooms must be insulated to prevent frost heave
  • Defrost method: electric, hot gas or air

From Brief to Cold Room

  1. You tell us what you store, how much, at what temperature and how it moves in and out.
  2. Design and load calculation. We calculate the cooling load and select panel thickness, refrigeration capacity and layout.
  3. The quote lists panels, doors, refrigeration equipment, controls, electrical works and commissioning, so you can see exactly what is included.
  4. Site preparation. We confirm a level slab, drainage and power supply, and agree who does which builders’ work.
  5. Panel erection. Panels are erected, sealed and fitted with doors and floor as specified.
  6. Refrigeration installation. The condensing unit and evaporator are installed and piped, then pressure-tested with nitrogen, evacuated and charged.
  7. We run a pull-down test, check defrost and controls, and test the alarms before the room goes into service.
  8. Handover and training. Your staff are shown the controller, alarms and basic daily checks, and receive the warranty and service details.

Reliability and Backup

We design so that one failure does not ruin the stock: high-temperature alarms, phase-failure protection and, where the load justifies it, a standby unit or generator changeover. After handover, a scheduled service plan keeps the plant in condition: see HVAC maintenance contracts.

Who We Build For

Food processors and distributors in Tatu City and Thika, butcheries and supermarkets, hotels and restaurants, dairies and milk-collection points, produce and flower handlers, beverage distributors, and institutions such as schools and hospitals. Where the project also needs building cooling or process cooling, we coordinate it with our Commercial & Industrial HVAC team.

Panels, Copper Pipe and Components

If you only need panels, doors, copper pipe or refrigeration components, see Industrial & Technical Supplies. For bespoke frames, racking or steel work around the room, see Mechanical Engineering & Fabrication.

Shred Designs tip

Tell us what you store, how much arrives each day and at what temperature. Loading warm product is the biggest single factor in how large the refrigeration unit must be, and it is the detail most often left out of a first enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a cold room cost?

It depends on size, temperature, panel thickness, the refrigeration unit and the electrical works. We quote after we have your brief and the site details, and the quote itemises each part.

How long does it take to build a cold room?

A small walk-in chiller can be built in days once the site is ready. Larger rooms and freezer rooms take longer because of floor, electrical and commissioning work. We give a programme with the quote.

What size of condensing unit do I need?

It is set by the cooling load, not the room volume alone. We calculate product load, heat through the walls, door openings and equipment, and select the unit with margin for your ambient conditions.

Can one room be used as both chiller and freezer?

Not reliably. A freezer room needs thicker panels, an insulated floor and a low-temperature refrigeration system. We design each room for its duty, though a room can often be upgraded at planning stage.

Does a cold room need three-phase power?

Small rooms can run on single-phase. Larger units and freezer rooms usually need three-phase. We confirm this during the survey.

Do you build outside Kiambu and Nairobi?

We build from our Kamakis base across Kiambu County and Nairobi, and take larger projects elsewhere on request.
