Cooling a multi-room office, a hotel floor, a clinic or a production area is an engineering job, not a bigger version of a home installation. The system has to be sized from the building’s loads, zoned for how the space is used, coordinated with the electrical, plumbing and structural work, and commissioned so that it performs as designed on day one and still does in year five.
Shred Designs designs, supplies, installs and maintains commercial and industrial HVAC systems from Kamakis, Eastern Bypass, for clients in Ruiru, Tatu City, along Thika Road and across Kiambu County. We work from your consultant’s drawings or produce the design ourselves. For a single room or a few small units, see AC Installation.
Variable refrigerant flow systems with one or more outdoor units serving many indoor units, for offices, hotels, clinics and schools.
Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, pumps, air handling units, fan coil units and cooling towers for large buildings and process cooling.
Self-contained packaged units for supermarkets, warehouses, showrooms and open-plan retail, installed on roofs or plinths.
Air handling units with supply and return ductwork, diffusers and fresh-air connections for offices, banks and conference halls.
Close-control units for server rooms, telecom rooms and laboratories that need tight temperature and humidity control around the clock.
Replacement of ageing R22 or fixed-speed plant with modern inverter systems, phased to keep the building in use.
System | Best suited to | Main strengths | Consider |
VRF/VRV | Offices, hotels, clinics, schools, mid-rise buildings | Control per zone, efficient at part load, less plant space than chilled water | Limits on refrigerant pipe length and the need for leak management on large systems |
Chilled water | Large buildings, hospitals, factories, malls | Scales to large loads, water carries heat over long runs, suits process cooling | Needs a plant room, pumps and water treatment, and more maintenance |
Packaged or rooftop | Supermarkets, warehouses, showrooms | One unit per zone, quick to install, serviced from the roof | Roof structure and access, less zone control |
Ducted central | Offices, banks, conference halls | Even cooling with hidden equipment, easy to integrate fresh air | Needs ceiling space and careful duct design |
Precision cooling | Server rooms, telecom rooms, labs | Tight temperature and humidity control, built for 24/7 running | Needs dedicated design and backup power |
Commercial cooling is only as reliable as its power. We check phase balance, starting current and generator changeover at design stage, and set controls so the system restarts correctly after an outage. For server rooms and critical spaces we design with standby units so one failure does not stop cooling.
Offices, banks and SACCOs; hotels and lodges; schools and colleges; hospitals and clinics; supermarkets and retail; and factories and warehouses in Tatu City and the wider Thika Road industrial belt. Where a project needs process cooling or temperature-controlled storage, we build it with our cold room team, and where it needs fresh air, extraction or filtration, with our ventilation team.
We install and service systems from manufacturers including Carrier, Trane and Toshiba, and will price to the brand your consultant specifies.
Older buildings often run ageing R22 or fixed-speed plant that is costly to keep alive. We survey what can be reused, phase the replacement floor by floor or zone by zone, and schedule noisy or disruptive work outside trading hours where possible, so your operation keeps running.
Shred Designs tip Ask every contractor for the heat-load calculation behind their proposed capacity. If two quotes for the same building show very different tonnages, one of them has guessed. |

Should I choose VRF or a chiller?
VRF suits most offices, hotels and clinics up to mid-rise and gives control per zone. Chilled water suits large buildings, hospitals and factories with big or process loads. The right answer comes from the load calculation and the building, so we assess both before recommending one.
How long does a commercial installation take?
It depends on size and on how much builders’ work is needed. A small commercial fit-out can take days, a multi-floor system takes weeks. We give a programme with the proposal.
Can you work from our consultant’s design?
Yes. We price and install to your consultant’s drawings and specification, and raise any coordination issues early.
Can you install while the building is occupied?
Yes. We phase the work and schedule disruptive tasks outside trading hours where possible.
Do you maintain systems you did not install?
Yes. We survey the plant, record its condition and quote a scheduled plan. See HVAC maintenance contracts.
How do you handle generator backup?
We check generator capacity against the starting current of the plant, specify changeover arrangements with your electrician, and set controls to restart cleanly after a power cut.
