Shred HVAC & Refrigeration Maintenance Contracts

When refrigeration fails, the clock starts on your stock. A cold room drifting above 8°C, a display fridge warming in a shop or a milk cooler that cannot reach 4°C in time means lost product and lost sales within hours. Shred Designs repairs commercial refrigeration from Kamakis, Eastern Bypass, for food businesses, dairies, hospitals, funeral homes and institutions in Kiambu County and Nairobi.

If your refrigeration has just failed

Keep the doors closed. Note what the controller is showing and any error code. Do not keep resetting the breaker or restarting the compressor, because repeated restarts can damage it. Move high-value stock to a working unit if you have one, and call 0704 879 675.

Common Faults and What Causes Them

Symptom

Usual causes

What we do

Room does not reach temperature

Low refrigerant, dirty condenser, failed condenser fan, frozen evaporator, undersized unit

Measure pressures and temperatures, clean the condenser, find and repair the leak, then recharge

Ice on the evaporator or ceiling

Failed defrost heater or timer, blocked drain, door gasket leaking warm air

Test the defrost circuit, clear the drain, replace gaskets, reset defrost settings

Compressor runs constantly

Low charge, dirty condenser, worn compressor, door left open or overloaded room

Check charge and airflow, test the compressor, advise on loading and door discipline

Compressor will not start or hums

Failed start capacitor or relay, overload trip, seized or burnt-out compressor

Test the electrical components and windings, replace what has failed

Temperature swings or short cycling

Faulty thermostat or sensor, poorly set controller, refrigerant problem

Test and reset the controller, replace the sensor, check the charge

Water inside the room or on the floor

Frozen or blocked drain, defrost fault, damaged drain heater

Thaw and clear the drain, test the heater, correct the fall

Display fridge warm or sweating

Worn door seals, dirty condenser, failed fan, faulty thermostat

Replace seals, clean the condenser, replace fan or thermostat

Milk cooler cannot reach 4°C in time

Condenser choked with dust, low charge, worn compressor, agitator fault, high ambient

Clean the condenser, check charge and compressor, test the agitator and controls

Controller alarm or error code

Sensor fault, board failure, power fault, high-temperature alarm

Read the code, test sensors and supply, repair or replace the board

Noise, vibration or oil stains

Loose mountings, failing fan bearing, leaking joint, worn compressor

Secure and rebalance, replace the bearing or motor, repair the leak

Compressor Problems: Repair First, Diagnose Always

A compressor rarely fails on its own. Low refrigerant, liquid returning to the compressor, a dirty condenser, bad wiring or a power fault are usually behind it. If we fit a new compressor without finding that cause, the new one fails the same way. We diagnose first, replace like for like or recommend a better match, and tell you if repair is not worth the cost.

Who We Serve

Food retail and hospitality: supermarkets, butcheries, hotels, restaurants and bars with display fridges, bottle coolers and cold rooms. Dairy: farms, cooperatives and milk bars across Kiambu County, where dust, heat and unstable power are hard on milk coolers. Health and funeral services: hospitals, clinics and funeral homes with mortuary refrigeration that must hold a steady low temperature without interruption. Processors and distributors: cold rooms and freezer rooms in Tatu City, Thika and Kamakis.

Preventive Servicing

Most refrigeration breakdowns are preventable. A regular visit cleans the condenser, checks the door seals, tests the defrost, checks the refrigerant charge and leak points, measures compressor current and oil, tests fan motors, controllers and alarms, and inspects contactors and wiring. See our HVAC maintenance contracts for scheduled visits and priority call-out.

Our Repair Process

  1. Call and triage. You tell us the equipment, the symptoms and what the controller shows, and we advise what to do until we arrive.
  2. We measure temperatures, pressures, current and airflow to find the cause.
  3. Quote before major parts. Major parts and compressor replacements are quoted and agreed before we fit them.
  4. Repair and pull-down test. We repair, run the system and confirm the room or unit reaches and holds temperature.
  5. Report and recommendations. We tell you what failed, what to watch and what to change to prevent a repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair a cold room the same day?

Often yes in Kamakis and Ruiru, depending on the fault and parts. Call 0704 879 675 with the symptoms and the controller reading.

Why does my cold room keep icing up?

The usual causes are a failed defrost heater or timer, a blocked drain or a door that lets warm air in. We test the defrost circuit first, then the drain and the seals.

Is it worth replacing a compressor?

Often, if the rest of the system is sound and the cause of the failure is found and fixed. On very old units, a new unit may be better value. We will give you both options.

How often should a milk cooler be serviced?

At least every few months, and more often in dusty farm locations. The condenser clogs with dust and the cooler then cannot reach 4°C in time.

Do you service mortuary refrigeration?

Yes, for hospitals, clinics and funeral homes. We work promptly and discreetly and can set up a regular service schedule.

Can you repair a control board, or does it need replacing?

Many controllers can be repaired, particularly where the fault is a component on the board. If repair is not sound, we replace the board or controller and set it up for your room.
